What is poe brothers?

Poe Brothers is a defunct chain of retail department stores that was popular in the Southeastern United States during the 20th century. The company was founded in Jacksonville, Florida in 1929 by four brothers – George, John, Harry, and Jack Poe.

Initially offering basic household goods, appliances, and clothing, the company rapidly expanded across Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina, opening numerous stores in small towns and cities. By the 1980s, Poe Brothers had become a major retailer in the region, with over 100 stores and revenues of over $1 billion.

However, the rise of discount stores like Walmart and Kmart in the 1990s hurt Poe Brothers' sales significantly, and the company struggled with debt and bankruptcy. The chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1994, and in 1995, all of its stores were closed. The Poe Brothers name was subsequently sold to local investors, who opened a few new stores under the brand name in the late 1990s, but they eventually closed as well.
